Fire up the Ford Focus 1 0 EcoBoost

JOURNALISTS have feet made of lead and a need to get absolutely everywhere as quickly as possible.

Thats one of the curious conclusions Ive drawn from driving the new EcoBoost version of Fords Focus, which mates a clever, award-winning new engine with the A* student of the family hatchback class. Make no mistake; its an intruiging take on one of Britains selling cars, especially given that nearly a fifth of Focuses being sold are EcoBoosts.

The key ingredient is the engine, which you can also find slotted into the Fiesta, Kuga, B-Max, and, in the fullness of time, the Mondeo too. The top pub fact about this extraordinary new powerplant is that its physically small enough to fit on a sheet of A4 paper, but thanks to direct injection and a turbo this 1.0 litre, three-cylinder motor more than punches above its weight, being not only the winner of a string of car industry awards but also being potent enough to work in the real world. Smooth, nicely revvy and equipped with 125bhp and 170nm of torque, underpowered this Focus aint.

The Ecoboost engine works well in the Focus too, with the light weight and characterful performance complimenting the cars reputation for being the family hatch with a sense of fun - keener drivers are going to love its fluid handling in particular. Its keenly priced too, with the Zetec S version I drove weighing at a shade over £19,000, putting on a par with a similarly powerful 1.6 engine but cheaper to run and kinder to the environment.

Or is it? Ford reckons the Focus EcoBoost should be able to get you more than fifty miles for your gallon of unleaded but a quick peek at the trip computer on the particular car I drove showed the journos whod been driving it around before me had got a shade over 36mpg, and a few minutes in Googles company revealed stories from other reviewers - and owners - who struggled to get anything like the official consumption figures.

I think the Focus EcoBoost is a great package which mates an already accomplished car to an award-winningly good engine, but on the crucial issue of fuel economy I can only conclude either a) its not quite as frugal as youd think or b) us car reviewers really are too hamfisted and heavy-footed for our own good.

Until Ford let me borrow one long enough to really how much fuel it sips the jurys out on an otherwise thoroughly good contender for your cash.

BUYERS ARE LIARS! part 2

I wrote this column about four years ago and this morning I received another comment on my blog. Here it is:

Hi Earl, good article. As a car sales professional, I have heard this saying and whilst I always approach every prospect with the right attitude: The number of lies I have been told I have lost count. Things like:a/ Customers telling you another dealer will give them an extra $4000 for their trade in: when you know the dealer deals with the same wholesaler b/ Customer tells me that another dealer will throw in a polished alloy bullbar: Two problems: that product was not available for that vehicle yet: yet they still insisted (and the store it was going to come from: TJM: didn’t even make tow bars for that model: and lo and behold: the other dealer hadn’t even met this guy.c/ Customer comes to me, we build a great rapport, then goes shopping elsewhere and buys: phones me to ask if i will match a deal that is so far below cost it couldn’t be anything other than a figment of their imagination: and after calling the dealer, finds out it is just that: and the real buyer was not the person who came to me. This other clown comes and parades the car and restates what deal they got: yet cant produce the invoice. That said, I love the car business and these people are part and parcel of it. I quickly work them out and eliminate them now ;)

This comment is just another example of why car salesmen develop this negative attitude toward their customers.  It’s reminiscent of what soldiers do when they go to war…they demonize the enemy to justify in their minds that their job which is to wound, kill or capture them. During WWII, the Japanese were the “Yellow Peril” and we called them Japs. The Japanese referred to us as Yankee Devils. The same held true with the Germans, Koreans, and today with the Muslims. Just like soldiers, car salesmen are often only “following orders” and they demonize their customers when they’re ordered to do things that their conscience wouldn’t permit them to do to a “good person”.

I don’t claim to be a psychologist (and I don’t even play one on TV), but I have read articles explaining how humans will stereotype other people in a fashion that falsely justifies their negative behavior toward those same people. We also see this with racism. If you make yourself believe that car buyers are out to take advantage of you, “buyers are liars”, you can’t feel guilty about tricking them into paying a dealer fee. If you trick a “roach” or a “slug” into coming in to buy a car on credit when they probably can’t, why should you feel guilty? After all, roaches and slugs don’t have feelings.

I’m always amazed by the way car dealers who use deceptive advertising and unethical sales tactics rationalize their behavior by actually blaming you, their customer. The following is a direct quote from an anonymous car dealer’s email I received this morning in response to one of my recent columns in this newspaper:  “I dont think you would make any of these comments if you sold fords in a non-metro market. How do you expect dealers to change when consumers think they should pay less than dealer cost for a car and then walk into any other form of retail store and pay what they are asking?? Your ideas are noble but there are other dealers who have tried your methods who are no longer in business.”This dealer is saying that his customers are so ruthless and cunning that they won’t buy a car unless they can buy it below his cost and his only solution is to trick them into thinking that they are buying it below his cost, like tacking on a “dealer fee” to the price they quoted the customer.  He also goes on to say that my “ideas are noble” but I can’t possibly be successful and I will go broke trying. I truly appreciate his concern and I want to assure him, if he is reading this article that my business is doing very nicely.

This attitude is actually a prevailing part of the culture in many car dealerships. Many dealers, dealer managers, and sales people don’t trust their customers (how paradoxical!). They don’t even like their customers. A very common expression among car dealers and their sales staff is “Buyers are liars”. This means that a prospective customer will not tell you the truth about the condition of his trade-in, he will lie to you about the price he got from your competitor, and he is likely to remove those new tires that were on his trade-in when the dealer appraised it when he comes in to pick up his new car.

There are also a lot of dealerships where used car buyers and people with bad credit are held in especially low esteem. They have nicknames for people with bad credit like “slugs” and “roaches”. Apparently dehumanizing these unfortunate members of our society with derogatory labels makes it easier to treat them so shabbily. People with bad credit are targeted with direct mail and newspaper ads making absurd promises that convince prospective customers that they can finance a car no matter how bad their credit. In some dealerships applicants are coached on how to falsify credit application and pay records. In some cases the applicant may not even know he is signing a false credit application which is federal offence.  In most cases the credit is refused and the applicants are not even given the courtesy of a return phone call to tell them this.

What these kinds of dealerships don’t understand is that you must trust a person first before you can expect her to trust you. You have to treat a person with respect before you can expect that person to respect you. Somebody has got to go first. My experience over the past 40+ years as a car dealer is that 99.9% of my customers are good people who I can believe and trust. Those are pretty good odds and I just assume that every customer I am dealing with is part of that 99.9%.  Once in a great while I get burned, but the loss from that one in a thousand that takes advantage is far out-weighted by the other 999 who respond positively to my trusting them and treating them with respect.

This Weeks Progress

 

Henry has continued making progress on repairing the train door for the 36.  It appears he has finished filling the inner door with epoxy, and the patch pieces for the outer door are ready for trimming.

 

 

Tim is a one-man window factory.  All of the upper and lower side sash have been finished, and are stored here.  He is now making the clerestory sash, which have three lights.

 

 

And then theres me.  I did some more surface prep and painting in the 319, as seen here.  White primer is nearly done on the ceiling, and on the walls theres still one double-window section to do.

Slowly Falling Apart

On Monday I walked out to check on the 321 again.  I usually climb a neighboring boxcar to view the top of the tarp, and also go inside.  The tarp still appears to be fine, but this section of ceiling has come loose and part of the molding has fallen to the floor.  This isnt the end of the world, by any means, but its a symptom of the slow deterioration that takes place even when a car is tarped.  Theres trapped moisture and condensation, and the result is not good.  The only long-term solution is building another barn.  And were getting close, but not close enough.  We still need your help.

After driving a host of increasingly complicated vehicles that are over-burdened with technology, I reveled in the absolute simplicity and honesty of the latest Jeep Wrangler. Blissfully absent from this Jeep are such unnecessary and expensive contrivances as lane departure warning, pedestrian avoidance software, radar cruise control, and automatic braking. Pay attention to your driving and you won’t miss a single one of these aids that distance and distract you from the task of driving. If you enjoy controlling your vehicle, then you’ll enjoy the technology-free, immediate feedback the Jeep provides.

Let’s start with the Wrangler’s handling. It’s super-quick steering responds immediately to the most minute input at the new, thick-rimmed steering wheel. At first this trait, magnified by the balloon-sized 255/75 R17 BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain T/A tires, is disconcerting. You’ll find yourself weaving all over the road. The “Baja Champion” emblazoned front tires seem inclined to follow every rut, causing you to over-correct for this tendency. But once you become used to the sensitivity level required, you relax your death grip on the wheel, and learn to enjoy the level of involvement required.

The Jeep Owner’s Manual is quick to remind you that the Wrangler, due to its tall stance and generous ground clearance, does not handle like a sports car, suggesting “If at all possible, avoid sharp turns or abrupt maneuvers.” But thanks to its short wheelbase, the Jeep is surprisingly agile on pavement and fun to drive on twisting roads. For off-road travel, the Rubicon features a front sway bar which can be disconnected to provide more traction when trailing in the outback. A dashboard-mounted switch left of the steering column, allows you to access this handy feature on the fly. Next to the sway bar switch is an axle lock switch which permits you to lock both rear wheels for maximum grip on uneven surfaces. Because the Rubicon is designed for drivers with serious off-road aspirations, this Jeep boasts a Rock-Trac transfer case with a 4:1 final drive ratio.

 

Adding spice to the mix is a torquey, 3.6 liter Pentastar V-6 engine, new for 2012, that produces 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. A notchy 6-speed manual gearbox is standard. Replacing the previous model’s 4 speed automatic transmission is a new 5-speed automatic W5A85D gearbox that adds $1,125 to the sticker price. The 24 valve V6, despite being 200cc smaller than last year’s 3.8 liter V6, depends on variable valve timing to improve passing performance and fuel consumption over its predecessor. Whereas last year’s automatic transmission Jeep returned 15 MPG City and 19 MPG Highway, the 2012 model posts figures of 17/21.

Jeep has also upgraded the interior fittings. Especially nice touches are the totemic Jeep grill sunshade printed on the windshield between the sun visors, and the discreetly incised “Since 1941” logo on the passenger grab bar. The front seats are nicely upholstered in leather, heated, and plenty supportive, even when bouncing around the outback. Visibility in all directions is refreshingly good, even though the rear seat headrests, back wiper, and full size spare obscure direct rear vision. Friends who hitched rides in the bench-style 60/40 folding rear seat reported no problems beyond those posed by difficult ingress/egress. If you plan to carry 4 regularly, then opt for the 4-door version of the Rubicon. The nifty hardtop removes in 3 separate sections to convert the Wrangler from coupe to convertible. In sum, the Wrangler Rubicon is a marvelously idiosyncratic vehicle that has lost none of its charm since 1941, but rather gained a lot of everyday practicality in the intervening years.
